Danny Thompson – Whatever

Danny Thompson – Whatever

Idle Monday is your track for this week. I love this tune; it comes from Danny Thompson’s 1987 album Whatever. And I hope it will be an Idle Monday too as we have our Spring Bank Holiday coming up.

We’re off to the seaside for the weekend – Bognor Regis here we come. Swimming costumes are packed, as is the sun cream lotion and obligatory silly hat. I jest! The weather forecast is offering us cool temperatures, rain and high winds. Well what would you expect, it’s a Bank Holiday after all.

Today when you tell people you are going to visit Bognor Regis they tend to think of the Butlin’s holiday resort or the fabled last words of George V – “Bugger Bognor”.

We Bognor lovers tend to emphasise the more creative characters who visited and / or worked in the area; William Blake, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, R.C. Sherriff and Eric Coates who was inspired to write In A Sleepy Lagoon, the theme tune to Desert Island Discs, by the view from Selsey across to Bognor. (And if you win first prize in a pub quiz with this fact, I claim my share of the prize)!

Really lovely track, Andy. I knew of the album, but never caught up with it – and it’s going for c£30 these days, so probably never will. I like doing that – ie returning to music I knew of, maybe even heard of, ‘at the time’, but, because I was listening to other (not always as good) things, miissed out on. I got hold of Henry Lowther’s ‘Child Song’ on one of these searches, and Hugh Hopper’s ‘Parabolic Versions’ on another – absolute belters, though in a misshapen, noodling between the notes sense.
